In a recent Ask-Google webmaster session, John Mueller was asked a question about Google’s Structured Data requirements, to which he gave an interesting reply that you must read below:

Question:

“Do we need to use structured data as per the Google Developers site or can we use more properties from Schema.org apart from the Developers site?

Answer by John Mueller:

“Independently, you’re always welcome to use structured data to provide better machine-readable context for your pages. Which may not always result in visible changes, but can still help our systems to show your pages for relevant queries.”

Key Learnings:

    • Google uses structured data for supporting rich result types and for a better understanding of web pages.
    • If structured data is used on a particular web page but it does not lead to rich results, it is still helpful for Google to understand the content of that web page.
    • If you are aiming to rank your web page in specific rich results type in Google, then you should follow Google’s Structured Data Requirements.
    • It is fine to use structured data properties that are not listed on the Google Developers site as it will still help Google understand the page in a better way and rank it for the relevant query.
